Personal / Why Now / Intro

As a Jewish woman, I’ve always been deeply connected to the rich culture and traditions of my heritage. Rockblocked explores not only the significance of family legacy within the Jewish community but also the fascinating—and often irrational—attachment people, particularly women, develop toward material items, especially jewelry. This attachment can be symbolic and, at times, deeply destructive. Through the pursuit of a family heirloom, the series explores how an obsession with a physical object, such as a wedding ring, can reveal the darker aspects of people, disrupt relationships, and lead to moral corruption. Something meant to represent love and tradition can, when idolized, transform into a symbol of power and manipulation. In researching this, I asked many women what heirloom they’ve always wanted and why. The responses were often vague; it was difficult to obtain a straightforward answer. This attachment feels built into our DNA: a desire to claim something tangible and precious that holds the weight of generations.
